Mohammad Zaki Ahmad

Biography:  

Dr. Mohammad Zaki Ahmad was a PhD candidate at ANCORS from 2007-2010 under the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) Scholarship Scheme. His PhD thesis presents an analysis of Malaysian laws, policies, and measures implement the international legal and normative framework for responsible fisheries. The objectives of his thesis are threefold. Firstly, his thesis identifies and analyses principles and their measures established in binding and non-binding global instruments for responsible fisheries in the EEZ. Secondly, his thesis examines the extent to which Malaysia has adopted these principles and measures in its domestic legal system. It further highlights gaps in the national legal and policy framework for responsible offshore fisheries. Finally, his thesis provides recommendations of policy and legal reforms necessary to address the identified gaps in the national framework. 

Dr. Zaki is currently holding the post as the Deputy Dean, School of International Studies (SOIS), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).  Previously, he headed the Department of International Affairs (INTAFF) from 2011 to 2013. During that period, he was the head of a special task force responsible in preparing and drafting Self-Assessment Report for ASEAN University Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) for the Bachelor of International Affairs Management (BIAM) Program.  Dr. Zaki is presently an AUN-QA internal auditor and involved in organizing and managing various workshops and seminars relating to the Program’s compliance with AUN-QA criteria.  His research interests include maritime-related foreign policy, responsible fisheries, law of the sea, maritime law enforcement, and IUU fishing.
