ANCORS Fellow

Julian Roberts
Visiting Fellow

Dr Julian Roberts is a visiting fellow at ANCORS. He completed his PhD with the Centre for Maritime Policy in 2006. His research focused on the role of legal measures available to the international community for the protection of sensitive marine environments from the impacts of shipping. In particular the research focuses on the application of IMO measures - including ships' routeing measures and Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSAs) - in the context of coastal States' obligations to protect the marine environment, as set out in the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention.

Julian is currently working as a Programme Officer with the World Conservation Union. His major area of responsibility focuses on the conservation of the western Pacific gray whale population along the eastern coast of Russia - a project being run in cooperation with Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. In addition he is working on conservation issues relating to the shipping and offshore oil and gas industries.

Originally from the UK , Julian trained as a marine scientist and was awarded an MSc in Marine Resource Management from Herriot-Watt University ( Edinburgh ) in 1995. On completion of his MSc he moved to New Zealand , where he worked in both the private and public sector for 11 years. During this time, he worked for several years as environmental advisor to the national maritime administration of New Zealand and its national marine oil spill response team.

Julian is a Chartered Marine Scientist with extensive experience in marine resource management and pollution control. He has worked with a broad range of maritime industries, including port and marina facilities, the offshore oil and gas sector and the shipping industry and represented New Zealand as a delegate to the International Maritime Organization for five years. He has extensive experience in marine pollution prevention activities and in the development of contingency planning arrangements for offshore installations and oil terminals.
