The Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) is a centre of excellence in oceans governance and maritime security knowledge services in Australia. ANCORS is a leading contributor to the Oceans and Transnational Security “Research Strength” within the University of Wollongong.
ANCORS provides multi-disciplinary university based research, education and high level advice on national and international oceans governance and law, maritime security and co-operation and ocean resource management to countries, agencies and clients in the western Pacific, Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean region and beyond, in order to help them achieve sustainable benefits from marine jurisdictions.
The global nature of the maritime environment, its governance and security means that ANCORS has a global perspective.

UOW hosts Australia-Japan
Comparative Oceans Policy Symposium  |
In collaboration with the Japan Ocean Policy Research Foundation (OPRF), the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) has co-hosted an Australia-Japan Comparative Oceans Policy Symposium on 11-13 November. The symposium is part of the ongoing collaborative research partnership between OPRF and ANCORS at the University of Wollongong and is intended to foster research into ocean issues of mutual interest.
OPRF is a Japanese independent research organisation, funded by the Nippon Foundation. The Executive Director of the OPRF, Mr Hiroshi Terashima, opened the presentations on the Japanese Ocean Policy. The symposium includes experts and government officials from Japan and Australia and is one of a number of collaborative workshops planned on ocean issues. A third symposium is being planned for January 2010 in Tokyo to follow up on issues of islands and ocean management.

ANCORS congratulates Dr Robin Warner and Prof Martin Tsamenyi for a successful Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Grant for their project entitled, “Harnessing the oceans to combat climate change: Developing law and policy frameworks for ocean energy and climate change mitigation.” A summary of other successful UOW ARC grants is available here. |

Master of Fisheries Policy |
The Australian National Centre for Ocean
Resources and Security (ANCORS),
University of Wollongong, is pleased to offer
a new Masters degree in fisheries policy
from Autumn (February) 2010, to
complement its existing Master of Maritime
Policy and postgraduate research degree
programmes.
The Master of Fisheries Policy
degree is a one-year (full time) multidisciplinary
programme designed for
fisheries and environmental policy officers,
mid-level managers and enforcement
officers from governments, and regional
and international organisations. The
degree covers international, regional and
national frameworks for sustainable
fisheries management and provides the
fisheries policy knowledge and skills
necessary for the management of fisheries
and aquatic resources.

From Hook to Plate: The State of Marine Fisheries – A Commonwealth Perspective |

The Commonwealth Secretariat has just published “From Hook to Plate: The State of Marine Fisheries – A Commonwealth perspective”. The book draws together the views of 24 contributors from across the Commonwealth on the state of marine capture fisheries and includes a chapter by ANCORS Senior Research Fellow Quentin Hanich and ANCORS Director Professor Martin Tsamenyi on “Development in Co-operative Approaches to Fisheries Management in the Pacific Islands Region”. The book confirms the assessments of both the World Bank and the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation that world fisheries are in very poor biological and economic health.
